How can we learn from every procedure?

We meet Michal, a local resident, who explains that at Mora Lasarett he has, for the first time, been working with VidiView. A system that allows surgical procedures to be recorded and stored with both video and audio. This provides a unique chance to revisit operations, analyse techniques, and receive valuable feedback.

Such an opportunity simply did not exist before. With these surgical recordings, however, every procedure now becomes a source of learning – whether things went exactly as planned or not. The result is greater confidence, better training, and stronger professional development as a surgeon.

Observe, reflect and improve – together

With VidiView, surgery can be recorded and used both for preparation and for feedback. Arvid, a resident, often reviews earlier procedures before his operating day and later discusses challenging moments with senior colleagues.

Lars-Göran, senior surgeon, reminds us that this way of working has deep roots. As early as 1899, the surgeon Eugène Doyen filmed his procedures to gain new insights. With VidiView, we continue in the same spirit: observing, reflecting, and improving – together.

Video recordings as motivation for surgical progress

For residents, video recordings are becoming an increasingly important part of everyday practice. They are not only a way to learn from senior colleagues, but also a means to document and follow personal development. When progress feels slow, looking back at previous recordings can reveal subtle improvements — offering both reassurance and motivation to keep moving forward.

Residents feel reassured when surgeries are video recorded

In this feature, we meet a fifth-year resident and a first-year resident, at the surgical department in Mora. With VidiView, they record laparoscopic operations with both audio and video. A resource that supports procedure analysis, colleague training, and patient communication.

The recordings provide valuable insights, as they regularly review challenging or successful steps together with supervisors to refine technique and learning. They are also shared during the department’s Friday meetings, where surgical sequences are shown and discussed. This way of working not only strengthens knowledge but also builds confidence among the residents.

VidiView – Learning for Safer Surgery

At Mora Hospital, VidiView is central to both training and quality improvement. Through the Black Box project, operations are recorded with video and audio, creating a unique platform for learning, reflection, and collaboration.

By comparing their own procedures with recordings from high-volume centres, surgeons gain valuable insights to refine techniques, strengthen patient safety, and drive continuous improvement. Today, the video archive is used by both students and specialists across Sweden as a powerful tool for safer surgery.
